One of the primary reasons for the hike in the prices of tomatoes is supply disruption.
In the month of March and April, there were severe heat waves across the country.
So, low-quality of tomatoes entered the market in the month of March and April. So, farmers could not get good margins.
Where Farmers got 10 to 15 rupees per kg in March and 2.5 to 5 rupees per kg in May.
So, farmers were under losses and then they switched to growing other alternative crops.
As a result, farmers grow tomatoes at 1000 acres against 3000 to 5000 acres in the previous year.
So, this hike in the prices of tomatoes will still be there for a long period till September.
Kharif Tomatoes will come to market in the month of Aug-Sep. If there is no disruption in the supply of tomatoes then there will be slight relief in the prices.
